Wardrobe Essentials: Spring '20
It’s Spring (in quarantine).
You may not have realized that the official start of Spring came and went on March 19, being quarantined at home and all. And while health care workers who are on the front lines are our heroes, many of us who are #stayinghome are hopefully making a small difference in stopping the spread of this virus. If you are finding solace in shopping, like myself, this is a great time to rifle through those (virtual) racks and maybe even score a few great bargains at your favorite retailers. After all, one day – hopefully in the near future – we will be allowed to socialize again. And just like that, we will return to asking the same old questions, like “what should I wear today?”
Here are the items that I am adding to cart (or digging out of my closet, since I am certain most of us have versions of the below that need to make a comeback in our daily wear) that will not only serve you during those quarantine zoom conference calls now but will create a great foundation for you to build on in seasons to come.
AN OVERSIZED BLAZER | Opt for neutral tones – think: grey, nude, muted army green- and an oversized fit. Wear it over your favorite t-shirt tucked into jeans, wear it buttoned up and belted at the waist, wear it over your favorite slip dress and dress it down with sneakers. A PADDED SHOULDER TEE | Chances are you have seen this t-shirt on your favorite blogger – one of the several cult classics that the Frankie Shop has put out over the last few seasons. The simple t-shirt, which now comes in all the neutral tones your heart may desire, is amped up with shoulder pads that create an easy to style yet high fashion silhouette. A PAIR OF BOYFRIEND JEANS | If there is one fit that you should invest in this season, it’s the boyfriend jean. With a slightly higher waist line and relaxed fit through the bum and legs, it’s a forgiving yet flattering silhouette (necessary after eating through all my quarantine snacks, many times over). Dress it down with a chunky knit and a sneaker or dress it up with a tshirt/blazer combo on top and strappy heels. Go for a denim or black pair to take the guess work out of matching. A KNIT CARDIGAN | What is better than a chunky big knit to curl up in while you are #stayinghome, to run to the grocery store (while keeping a healthy social distance, of course), or to throw on during the weeks when the flowers are starting to bloom but cooler Spring temps are still hanging around? Tuck it into your new Boyfriend jeans or top it with your oversized blazer to give yourself more shape. Click to shop the images below.
A BOILER SUIT | I promise you that a boiler suit is easier to wear than it looks. Pair it with a strappy sandle to wear out or a sneaker/flat mule to grab coffee. Add accents of small gold hoops or a chunky gold chain to add a feminine touch (which I prefer!). Click to shop the images below.
A SLIP DRESS | While floral dresses are quintessential for any Spring wardrobe, I prefer a solid slip dress as a necessary basic to invest in. On a warm Spring day, wear your slip dress with sandals and chunky gold jewelry. On a cold Spring day, throw your oversized blazer on top and add a belt around the waist to pull all together. And for your Saturday night dinner plans, just add your strappy heels. Click to shop the images below.
A TRENCH/LIGHT COAT | Is there anything easier than throwing on a great coat to make even the simplest sweat suit or t-shirt and jeans look put together? Invest in a plaid or herringbone coat or a solid lighter trench, and it will take you through seasons to come. Click to shop the images below.
A PAIR OF SNEAKERS | I live in heels, because there is nothing like a little (or a large) height boost when you are just over 5ft tall. But there are days when even I need to give my feet some comfort, and I refuse to let comfort get in the way of crisp, smart style. Click to shop the images below.
A NEUTRAL SANDAL | See above…for when I am not in sneakers, which is basically always, these are the strappy and slide-in sandals that I am coveting. Click to shop the images below.
SQUARE FRAMED SUNNIES | If you are like me, and don’t love the look of teeny sunglasses or retro cat-eye sunglasses (neither cover my full eye, which defeats the purpose of sunglasses all together!), opt for an oversized square frame in black, gold (aviator style), or tortoise. Any one of these colors will match seamlessly with the pieces above! Click to shop the images below.
And now you are ready to take advantage of all the free time you have and get to shopping.
